Capcom pushes back on gacha-likes and loot boxes in 2020 annual report

Video game publishers like Capcom are continuing to see high sales and massive growth but lootboxes remain a controversial topic. In Capcom’s 2020 annualreport, the company notes that gacha game mechanics and loot boxes will not be pursued in Capcom titles.
The report reads that “As a creator of entertainment culture, Capcom believes that games should be enjoyed for the entertainment value they provide with gameplay, not for thrills associated with winning a lottery. We do not want to see games that are supposed to make people happy having the opposite effect as a result of excessive charges.”
The report continues with Capcom emphasizing that these elements will be kept out of its games, with a focus on fair fun, stating “For that reason, we are working to ensure that all users can enjoy our games fairly and safely. In principle, we minimize gacha elements in the mobile games we develop; in our home video games, we provide any content required to enjoy the full game free of charge, while offering some additional content at low cost.”
Capcom has seen major success over the last couple of years, with the Resident Evil franchise reaching over 105 million copies sold, with Resident Evil 3 remake accounting for3 million copies sold. Meanwhile, Monster Hunter World has risen to become Capcom’s best-selling game of all time at over16 million copies sold.
