Key notes
Microsoft announced that the hotly-talked technology of ChatGPT is coming to its Office 365 apps, which include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Dubbed Microsoft 365 Copilot, Redmond officials even promised that it’s more than just ChatGPT being slapped into the ecosystem. In fact, AI-powered large language models (LLMs) of this technology are trained on an enormously large amount of data to unlock users’ productivity.
With this addition, you can summarize a long email thread on Outlook, organize presentations with simple prompts on PowerPoint, simplify your data on Excel, and create drafts easily on Word.
Today marks the next major step in the evolution of how we interact with computing, which will fundamentally change the way we work and unlock a new wave of productivity growth … With our new copilot for work, we’re giving people more agency and making technology more accessible through the most universal interface — natural language.
The news arrived amidstOpenAI’s GPT-4 launchwhich, if anything, is not a coincidence at all. Equipped with a multi-modal model, the software is way more capable than its predecessor GPT-3 since it’s able to access sound and image input—you can even ask the bot to create a menu by taking a picture of your inside fridge.

And, as noted by Windows enthusiast @XenoPanther, the Copilot feature is coming to Word from Build 16325.20000 onwards.

ChatGPT on Microsoft Office 365 apps: Good news for many?
JUST IN: Microsoft introduces 365 Copilot: a new LLM based AI-copilot for the Microsoft Suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams.?Here’s a summary:pic.twitter.com/mWIEpzjrwm
The launch of GPT-4 is surely a groundbreaking milestone in AI’s use among users, and its integration with Microsoft 365 apps is just the beginning. OpenAI has reached over 100 million active users within the first month of ChatGPT’s launch, but given the stature of Microsoft, it’s safe to say that the reach will expand even further.
According to the tech giant, almost 9 out of 10 developers on GitHub said that its copilot functionality helped them to become more productive, while others admitted that it had helped them to spend less time researching.
The response has been quite exciting for the community, at least. Users on Reddit have said that the big milestone will result inlarge productivity gains, albeit acknowledging that it may be facing a bumpy road within the first versions.
I know it’s just a flashy marketing video, but watching thetrailerfor Microsoft 365 copilot gave me legitimate chills. This is going to change every aspect of how we work. Everything is about to go intomaximum hyper-productivity overdrive. Presentations and reports that used to take weeks to prepare will now take hours (and employers willexpectthat). Business decisions will be made orders of magnitude faster, research papers published in weeks instead of months or years.
At the same time, just like every time a new groundbreaking technology gets announced, many people have voiced their concerns that the power of GPT-4 could cost them their jobs since it could potentially cut a few working hours off.
We will be producing so much information that it will be impossible to process unless you have an AI summarizing it for you. It’s not just AI that will accelerate, everything will accelerate.
The AI war is getting heated
The news also arrived not too long after Google announced its first set ofAI-powered writing features and assistantson several select users of Docs and Gmail.
Workspace’s mission is to meaningfully connect people so they can create, build and grow together — and advances in generative AI are allowing us to deliver on this mission in new ways. Today, we’re sharing our broader vision for how Workspace is evolving to incorporate AI as a collaborative partner that is always there to help you achieve your goals, across Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Meet, and Chat.
In short, the search engine giant is testing features to summarize Gmail threads, brainstorm on Docs, simplify slide creation on Slides, generate simple visuals from raw data on Sheets, and more. Just like what Microsoft is doing on 365.
Additionally, Google also revealed its plan to develop an AI speech that could recognize over 1.000 most-spoken languages in the world, while its Bard chatbot is still far from primetime.
