The magnetic Mekai Curtis returns to screens in the latest chapter of Kanan Stark’s hard-hitting origin story. And as well as navigating the mean streets of early 90s Queens in New York City, season 3 sees Kanan facing skeletons in his family’s closet as more details continue to emerge about the background of his mother Raquel (powerfully played by Patina Miller).
The epic climax of season 2 saw Raq’s drug empire being dismantled spot by spot by Sal’s hoods. And just when it looked like she was going to meet her maker, along came an unexpected knight in shining armor. How will she now dust herself down and begin rebuilding her gang? And how will Raq repair the damage done to the relationship with her son, now that Kanan knows her truth?
But the aspect that makes the Raising Kanan spin-off so moreish is the level of detail paid to some of its peripheral characters. As if Kanan and Raq weren’t compelling enough, season 3 also picks up the threads of Marvin’s redemption arc, Lou’s own personal evils and Jukebox’s attempts to break the overbearing shackles of his lineage.
Kanan Stark was the role originally portrayed by rapper 50 Cent – the real-life father of Mekai Jackson – all the way back in the original Power series, and his fingerprints remain all over Kanan Rising as narrator and executive producer. So this latest series should also help whet the appetite if you’re eagerly awaiting the upcoming 8 Mile TV series, too.
