Google Chrome is the most popular browser in the world, and Microsoft wants to change that. With the aim of finding a new argument to convinceChromeusers to switch to Edge, Redmond carried out an experiment demonstrating its browsers superior battery management.
Despite the test having been carried out by Microsoft, it’s easy to trust the results as this isn’t the first time Chrome has been accused of gobbling up battery.
Microsoft tested four browsers in this experiment: Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera: The results showed that Edge is the most battery friendly browser, followed by Opera,Firefoxthen Chrome. The battery on the laptop running Edge lasted for 7 hours and 22 minutes, the battery on the laptop running Opera lasted for 6 hours and 18 minutes, followed by Firefox with 5 hours and 9 minutes and Chrome with a disappointing 4 hour 19-minute battery life.
It is very startling that Opera achieved just second place given that the company after boasting about its new battery saver feature. Opera’s new Saver Mode is supposed to help users to extend laptop battery life by almost 50% because it keeps laptops 3°C cooler, as well asreduce activityin background tabs, automatically pause unused plug-ins, reduce frame rate to 30fps, and pause animations of browser themes.
Edge is lighter and faster to launch, and is integrated with Windows for use with Cortana, something that could explain the results from Microsoft’s experiment. Since Edge is specially built for Windows 10, the browser is fully optimized for the OS and has a minimum impact on the laptop’s battery life.
