Despite the ongoing chip shortages, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X and Series S consoles are the fastest-selling consoles in the history of Xbox. The Redmond giant still isn’t sharing official sales figures, but Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad recently estimated Xbox Series X|S consoles sales at 12 million, a numberbased on Xbox One and Xbox 360 salesat the same point in their lifetime.

In a recent interview with Kara Swisher forThe New York Times, Xbox head Phil Spencer said that demand for current-gen consoles remains extremely high. “When you think about trying to go get an Xbox or a new PlayStation right now in the market, they’re really hard to find. And it’s not because supply is smaller than it’s ever been. Supply is actually as big as it’s ever been. It’s that demand is exceeding the supply for all of us,” Spencer said.
For this console generation, Microsoft opted for a two-pronged approach with a premium Series X console priced at $499, completed by a less powerful and digital-only Series S console priced at $299. This strategy seems to be working as Microsoft announced back in November that the Series S had outsold the Series X in several key markets. Xbox head Phil Spencer also previously forecasted thatthe Series S could sell more units than the Series Xduring this console generation.
Even though Microsoft’s Xbox Series X|S consoles are selling really well, Sony’s PlayStation 5 still sold more units so far. The last official figure was13.4 million PS5 consoles soldback in October, and the PS5 likely kept its lead during the holiday season. Still, Sony can’t really keep up with the demand, andBloombergreported earlier today that the Japanese company should manufacture a million more PS4 consoles this year to compensate for the PS5 supply issues.
