In the last week of May, Microsoft unveiled its new Windows Backup app throughWindows 11 Insider Build 23466. This app was initially accessible only to Windows 11 users enrolled as Insiders on the Dev channel.

Now, this utility is being introduced to Windows 10 as well. Presently, it has been integrated into the build released to the Release Preview Channel, indicating that Windows 10 users will soon have access to an official backup tool from Microsoft.

What sets the Windows Backup app apart is its comprehensive approach to data protection. Beyond merely safeguarding files, the app takes on the task of backing up system settings, along with the contents of the Start menu and the taskbar.

The app’s scope is extensive, and it serves a dual purpose, as highlighted by Microsoft. Not only does it provide an easy means to backup and restore one’s computer, but it also streamlines the transition to a new PC, especially one running the upgraded Windows 11.

The Windows 10 version of the app closely resembles the iteration released for Windows 11 users, with the exception of the absence of the Out Of Box Experience. This has led to speculation within the tech community about the potential intentions behind this difference. Some speculate that Microsoft might leverage the Windows Backup app to simplify the migration process from Windows 10 to Windows 11. However, Microsoft has not provided any official statements regarding this matter.
