At the beginning of the year, there was a bit of uncertainty pertaining toMicrosoft’s commitment to HoloLens 2and its Mixed Reality program amid the massive layoffs across the company, which also affected the division behind the headset. The division had already suffered a significant blow afterAlex Kipman’s departurelast year.
Microsoft confirmed that it was still committed, and true to its words, the company has announced its plans to release a new update for HoloLens 2. The new update will bring Windows 11 to the headset.
At the moment, the update is in the testing phase and is only available for Windows Insiders. The optional update is set to hit general availability later this year towards the end of June.
While the update isn’t significantly major, it does ship with some notable improvements. Here’s everything you need to know:
First, developers will now be able to better manage their web-based app experiences through the WebView2 control in Edge. Next up, the update also ships with a new Dynamics 365 Guides mode that’s designed to help users scribble and get creative anywhere while on video calls.
Additionally, the update features a new “Restricted Mode” that’s designed to help users establish more control over which mixed reality apps can be accessed via the HoloLens 2 headset.
With the new update, HoloLens’ OS build will transition to 22621 to align with the latest version of Windows 11. What are your thoughts on Windows 11 coming to HoloLens 2? Let us know in the comments.
