Pakistan vs Bangladesh preview
Only winning is good enough at Eden Gardens for Pakistan and Bangladesh today, each with only the slimmest prospects of gaining passage to the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup semi finals. And Pakistan are in the box seat after bowling out Bangladesh for an underwhelming 204. Seamers Shaheen Shah Afridi and Mohammad Wasim Jr took three wickets a piece, with the former looking particularly good with ball in hand.
After a hot start with two wins from their first two games, Pakistan have really struggled to find their groove since. They were beaten soundly by Australia and neighbors India and Afghanistan, leaving them short of confidence and group points.
But against the in-form South Africa last Friday, the Men in Green came within one wicket of turning the tide. Half centuries from captain Babar Azam and Saud Shakeel helped them compile a competitive total and Afridi led the bowling attack valiantly. But still they came up short in the tournament’s most exciting game to date. They really need to win all their remaining games to stand a chance of progressing, starting at Kolkata today.
For Bangladesh, the task is even tougher. Having managed only one solitary win from their six group games so far, not even winning their final three will certify them a semi-final spot. They need others ahead of them to trip up, too. Their thrashing on Saturday at the hands of the Netherlands typified just how poor they’ve been in India, and it’s very hard right now to see how Shakib Al Hasan’s men will be able to turn around their fortunes.
Having won the toss and chosen to bat, the Tigers bring in back Towhid Hridoy for Mahedi Hasan to give more depth to their batting line-up. Pakistan are rolling the dice with three big changes, dropping Imam-ul-Haq, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz from their starting XI; in come Fakhar Zaman, Agha Salman and Usama Mir.
Bangladesh:Litton Das, Tanzid Hasan, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Shakib Al Hasan (captain), Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah, Towhid Hridoy, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam
Pakistan:Abdullah Shafique, Fakhar Zaman, Babar Azam (captain), Mohammad Rizwan, Saud Shakeel, Iftikhar Ahmed, Agha Salman, Shaheen Afridi, Usama Mir, Mohammad Wasim Jr, Haris Rauf
