Sony has rolled out beta testing of its cloud gaming servicefor a randomly selected group of PSN users. It wasfirst announced back in Junethat cloud streaming would be coming to the PS Plus Premium tier eventually.

There has been no announcement on when the feature will fully launch for PS5 users, and at this point the service is still at an early stage development-wise.

Cloud gaming is one area where Sony has lagged behind competitor Xbox.Xbox Cloud Gaming, which is available with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, features over 100 compatible titles including first-party AAA blockbusters likeForza Horizon 5,Halo Infinite, and more. Xbox Cloud Gaming makes compatible games available over a wide range of devices including Android and iOS mobile devices, Windows PCs, MacBooks and more.

Microsoft’s lead in the nascent cloud gaming markethas been one of the main sticking points with regulators in its endeavor to acquire Activision Blizzard, and was cited by the CMA as the primary reason for its decision to block the deal in the United Kingdom.

Meanwhile, Sony looks to close the competitive gap in the cloud gaming market with what PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan called “quite aggressive plans” for that space.

Ryan added in those remarks, “We observe mobility in gaming habits to be an increasingly important trend, and the cloud will be fundamental to allowing us, or indeed anybody else, to exploit that trend.”
