Key notes
Microsoft Coffeeis a story that has been around the Internet since 2021, and it is obviously about Microsoft. While the legitimacy of it is questionable, the idea is quite fascinating. It seems that in 1996, the Redmond-based tech giant released Microsoft Coffee, as a product intended to compete with Java.
Apparently, the whole set-up was in fact a prank, and Microsoft was not involved in it, but rather a group of people who wanted to have some fun. Microsoft Coffee boxes were then released in the local Seattle area, to shops, Walmarts, and so on.
According to the story, the local press, some local TV stations, and Radio stations covered the subject and presented it as news. Microsoft heard about it, and then proceed to collect and destroy all of the Microsoft Store.
Apparently, the prank even got Bill Gates to comment on it, and the founder said the joke was made in poor judgment. But here’s a catch. Some users think that the story of the prank is not real. And it was all just made up.
The story on Microsoft Coffee – is it real or not?
Well, we may not know for sure, but this Reddit thread has brought forward some legitimate points when it comes to the validity of the story.
It seems that thewebsiteand the social network accounts for the Microsoft Coffee story were all created on April 1st, 2021. The creators even posted a video with an old video recording of the news covering the story back in 1996.
Even more, the website has a screenshot of a webpage of the time, covering and selling Microsoft Coffee as well.
The story of the prank is most likely false and the best point for this stance is the fact that there were no mentions of Microsoft Coffee prior to April 1st, 2021.
Plus, it seems that there is no other corroborating evidence anywhere on the internet regarding Microsoft Coffee. So this story started out as a prank, and it is ultimately a prank.
