Xbox Series X|S has now sold an estimated 20 million units worldwide

As of early December, the current-gen Xbox Series X|S console has sold an estimated 20 million units globally according toVGChartz. By comparison Sony’s PlayStation 5 has now sold an estimated 28 million units according to the same source. Nintendo’s Switch console, which released in March 2017, has now sold over 118 million units in its lifetime.

The year-to-date figures look like this:

While Xbox is the no. 3 player in this data, the news is hardly bleak for the Series X|S. In fact, that is already at least 1/3 as many units as the Xbox One sold in its whole lifespan—which was 50-60 million—in just over two years!

Throughout the year we have reported impressive sales feats for the Series X|S, which suggestthe console may be gaining ground on the competition. In some cases it is the more accessible Xbox Series S in particular, with many gamers new to the Xbox ecosystem finding an attractive offering in smaller, more affordable next-gen Xbox.

All in all the Series X|S has had a stout 2022 despite a lack of first-party game releases from Microsoft and Xbox Game Studios. It’ll be interesting to see what develops in the year to come.
