The Xbox Network experienceda major outage over the weekendthat left users unable to access network features for at least a 12-hour period, with issues still being reported as of Monday. During the outage, which began early Friday, Xbox users were unable to purchase or launch many digital games or content. Users were also unable to use Xbox Cloud Gaming services or make subscription purchases such as for Game Pass or Xbox Live Gold. Some users reported beingunable to access their accounts altogether.

The Xbox Support Team shortly addressed the issue and began to make fixes throughout the day, posting regular updates on its official Twitter account.

We’re aware that some users are unable to purchase games, launch games or start Cloud Gaming sessions. Our teams are investigating. Please keep an eye here and on our status page for updates.https://t.co/kQKp1LYR4o

However, it wasn’t until more than seven hours later that Xbox Support declared the issues resolved…partially.

Users should once again be able to complete purchases. Our teams are still investigating issues launching games and starting Cloud Gaming sessions. Please keep an eye here and on our status page for updates.https://t.co/kQKp1LYR4ohttps://t.co/PZyQKJr5sX

And it wasn’t for several more hours until Xbox Support announced that the outage had been remedied more than 12 hours after it began, though even as of Sunday there were users reporting network issues. (Those still experiencing issues at this point should try rebooting their Xbox console).

All users should once again be able to launch games and start Cloud Gaming sessions. Thank you for your patience and happy gaming!https://t.co/OGCIVFbyuw

The event has led some to criticize how the industry uses Digital Rights Management (DRM) software, which in this case prevented players from accessing games they had purchased and installed on their consoles.
